Keratin Extensions
Keratin extensions are perhaps the best known type of extensions, and consist of locks of hair with a bond in keratin, a protein which is heated and which melts to fix the extension to the customer’s own hair. The length of these extension varies, and depends on the product purchased: we offer keratin extensions in 40, 50 and 60 cm lengths. Lengthening an entire head of hair normally requires between 100 and 200 extensions, depending on the customer’s hair style, and the final effect desired.
Cost. These extensions are the most expensive of the two, for two reasons: the cost of the product itself, and the labor costs involved, since coverage of an entire head takes between 2 and 4 hours on average.
Duration. If correctly applied and maintained, these extensions can last for up to 6 months.
What to watch out for.
We advise choosing only Remy hair with intact cuticles.
A good option if you want lasting hair extensions and a professional result.
Tape-in extensions
Extension adesive
Very popular over the last few years, tape-in extensions give a semi-permanent result in less time. They consist of a water-resistant adhesive strip (4 cm wide on our extensions) to which the hair is fixed.
The adhesive strip can be cut in half widthways to allow it to be applied to the areas where the bond needs to remain invisible, for example the temples.
One extension is then applied underneath a section of your hair, and another on top, “sandwiching” the natural hair in between. Covering an entire head requires between 36 and 48 tape-in extensions (18-24 double, “sandwiched” extensions). For extra thickness, up to 60 extensions (30 applications) may be needed.
Cost. The cost of the extensions themselves is similar to those in keratin, but less time is needed to apply them, meaning that the end price is normally slightly lower than for keratin extensions.
Duration.
If kept in good condition, these extensions may be reused after replacing the adhesive. The first application can last up to 4 months (although 2-3 months is more usual, depending on the speed of re-growth), after which they must be removed and re-applied if desired.
What to watch out for. Just as for keratin extensions, in the case of tape-in extensions too, it is better to choose genuine Remy hair with intact cuticles, which if correctly maintained, can last up to a year or 18 months.
A good option if you want lasting hair extensions and a professional result, with the possibility of reusing the extensions.
When are keratin extensions recommended?
In our experience, this is the only type of extension suited to those with very fine or thinning hair. In cases such as these, tape-in extensions are not suitable, since their greater width and application in pairs gives a result which is too full for this type of customer.
Indeed, one pair of tape-in extensions (with a width of 4 cm, applied “sandwich style” as described above) is equivalent to 6 or 7 keratin extensions applied in the same space.
If the customer has very thin hair, the tape-in extensions may become visible, as well as giving an uneven thickness compared to the rest of the hair, a problem which can be solved by using Evolution tape extensions.
When are tape-in extensions recommended?
Certainly for those who find themselves in the opposite situation of that described above: when a customer has very thick or very short hair, tape-in extensions guarantee an excellent end result.
When applied correctly and very close to each other, tape-in extensions provide much better coverage than keratin extensions.
For perfect and even end result, we recommend using standard tape extensions, combining them with Evolution tape extensions for a better finish.
As many as 30 extensions (30 pairs) may be required for extra thickness.
How many keratin extensions does this correspond to?
Approximately 250 keratin extensions, however it is likely that those in keratin will give a poorer end result.
Regardless of the type of extension chosen, it is important to bear in mind that the success of your extensions also depends on choosing high quality hair, and correct application of the extensions by a professional stylist.
